The AtlasEmberknot+

Everywhere you have been.
And why it mattered.

A globe of the places the two of you have been, in the order you went, with the reason each one is on there. Not a checklist of cities — a record of what happened.

Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal

March 2024 · 7 days

The first time we went anywhere together. It rained the entire week and we did not care once.

The important part

Nothing here knows
where you are.

Every pin on that globe was typed by one of you, after the fact, because you wanted it there. Emberknot asks for no location permission on either phone.

  • No location permission, on either platform. Not “only while using”, not “approximate”. The app never asks, so there is nothing to grant and nothing to revoke.
  • No geofences and no background location. The app cannot tell when you arrive somewhere. That is why check-ins are a button you press.
  • A pin is a place, not a position. You search for a city and choose it. What is stored is that choice, rounded to about a hundred metres — a neighbourhood, not an address — because that is all a dot on a globe needs.
  • No history of where you were. A journey holds the dates you typed and nothing about your movements between them.

The check-in feature is still entirely coordinate-free — its schema rejects a latitude outright, and a test names the field so it stays that way.

On both phones

A globe you can actually use.

Spin it, pinch it, search it. Tap a pin and it flies there, with the dates and the reason. Add a place from anywhere — a trip you are planning shows up in Moments on its own.

Spin, zoom, search

The globe is the whole interface. Drag to turn it, pinch to come right in — eight times, close enough to see which part of a country a pin sits in — or type a name and let it fly there. Everything is one gesture from everything else.

The thread between them

Places are joined in the order you went, so the shape on the globe is the shape of your years together. It is the same thread the rest of the app is named for.

Why, not just where

Every pin holds a reason. A list of cities is a CV; the sentence underneath is the part worth keeping, and it is what the map is really showing.

Upcoming trips surface

Add somewhere you are going and it appears at the top of Moments, counting down, without changing anything else about how that page works.

Start the map.

The Atlas is part of Emberknot+, along with voice notes, the widgets, the Lock Screen and the Watch. One subscription covers both of you.
